Peter: The Weak Rock!

Matthew 26:31-35; 69-75

Background
•Introduced to Jesus by Andrew
•Belonging to the fishing community in Galilee
•Was Married
•primus inter pares- first among equals
•Symeon-Simon; Cephas-Peter
•Gospel of Mark, 1 & 2 Peter

Peter’s Denial
•He declared Jesus as Messiah (Mt 16)
•He was the one who wielded the sword - courage
•The Courtyard- Jesus v/s Peter
•Wept Bitterly- He failed and failed bad…“The rock…now sobbing like a blob of jelly”

The Reality of Success
•Success is overrated
•Failure is a fact of life, and most of the time not funny
•Peter’s denial is one that is tragic
• Failure is a fact in the Bible- OT & NT
•Failure is a fact of Experience- Every mission is not a success story. At the same time the success stories of mission work has in its stories disappointments and discouragements.

Returning to Peter
•A predicted failure, not of just him but each of the other 10…a motley crew (Mt 26:56)
•A Faith Prayed For By the Lord Himself (Lk 22:31-32, Jude 24)
•A Failure Forgiven (Jn 21:15-19)
•Failure- a fact, foreseen and forgiven...As believers we know that a "victorious faith" is not a faith in which we do not recognize how fallible we are. We constantly find ourselves in what Paul would describe doing or falling in the very things we do not want to do. In identifying with Peter we see that it is Jesus who hold us right through. It is comforting for us to know that Jesus actually has prayed through my failures. This is different from habitual sinful life. But it refers to being vulnerable person. Jars of clay!

Take Away: AS A BELIEVER,  BE CONCIOUS THAT- POVERTY OF THE HEART IS RICHNESS IN THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST
