THYATIRA: A CHURCH TOLERANT OF SEDUCTION WITHIN

Scripture Passage: Rev 2:18-29
THYATIRA THE CITY (known as Akhisar)THYATIRA THE CITY (known as Akhisar)
•A small city with the longest letter
•A garrison, established in the time of Alexander, Caesars Elite Guard
•Emperor Worship: Apollo/Zeus
•Shrine of goddess Samathe
•‘Trade-Guild’: Agriculture, linen, metal, leather, bakers and potters
•Lydia (Acts 16:14)
Commendation (vv. 18-19)
•Only place in the NT where Jesus introduces himself as the ‘Son of God’
•Blazing Eyes and Feet of Burnished Bronze (1:15; Dan 10:6)
•The guilds demanded many cultic practices which made one a certified member
•Thyatiran’s were doing more than just existing in contrast to Ephesus
Concerns at the Church(vv. 20-21)
•Jezebel- a metaphor
•Someone in Israel’s history seduced God’s people to Baal worship (1 Kgs 16:31)
•She is from within
•Taught the Christians that its okay to be involved with pagan practices
Was given time to repent
A CALL TO REPENT (vv. 22-23)
•Every teaching gives birth to progeny, the children of Jezebel were asked to repent of their ways…another opportunity
•Lack of repentance, would bring in suffering in some cases death
•What will this make known?
•Jesus looks at the heart
•Salvation is through faith, judgement is based on works
A PROMISE TO HOLD (vv. 24-28)
•Satan’s deep secrets
•Hold on, no extra burden
•To the victor the ‘Iron Scepter’ (Psalm 2)
•Also the ‘Morning Star’ (Num 24:17, Rev 22:16)
CALL TO THE CHURCH TODAY
•“The church in this age is more under attack from the proponents of the Gospel than the opponents of the Gospel” L. Hill
•When our existential needs become the ultimate, we will lend ears to a Gospel that lacks the genuineness of the Gospel.
Take Away:  BE VIGILANT OF WHAT IS CLAIMED UNDER THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST
