RESCUED TO RECALL AND REJOICE- CELEBRATING THE LORD’s TABLE

Scripture Matthew 26:17-30

Context of the Passover Meal
•Jesus is wanted by the…Pharisees and the Romans are watching
•Jesus is in Bethany and its Passover
•Sandwiched between betrayal and denial

WHEN GOD SET THE TABLE HIMSELF
•The Passover was to be eaten within the city walls of Jerusalem and using a ritually slaughtered lamb
•Mk 14…Jesus apparently has something arranged and gives instructions to the disciples

RECALL AS A RESCUED PEOPLE
•This was a memorial meal that signified Israel’s identity as YHWH’s people (Ex 12)…Instructions on how to prepare the meal and how to eat it is all given to Israel to follow for generations. This meal was given even before the 'exodus' actually happened. God was certain about rescuing his people, even though the Israelites were not sure and Egypt was certain that no one could defeat them, and in this case brickmakers for generations! No casualties across the Red Sea!
•It Celebrated:
a) God
b) Blood of the Lamb
c) Hope for the future
IN THE UPPER ROOM
•The disciples have dutifully prepared to celebrate the meal
•Prophecy to be fulfilled-Betrayal...while scripture is to be fulfilled, Judas was responsible for his actions.
•The Bread- Affliction- The New Exodus
•The 4 Cups of wine- 4 promises
- I will redeem you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians
- I will free you from being slaves to them, and
-I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgement
- I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God
Whose, For Whom and Why? Jesus blood for many for the forgiveness of sins (Exodus 24:1-11; Is 53:12; Jeremiah 31:31-34)
Take Away: AS A BELIEVER YOU ARE RESCUED, YOU ARE TO RECALL AND REJOICE IN CHRIST’s WORK ...we celebrate God's redemptive work and recall it, all because of Jesus' shed blood and for sure Jesus' return is promised. It is glorious when you and I understand that Jesus was very sure about his return but are we certain enough about it to hope gloriously?
